RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE)
Curriculum Map
Intent
In West Acton, we follow the Ealing locally agreed syllabus theme, Religion and Worldviews: “Believing, behaving, belonging.” This syllabus is currently under review. The syllabus covers the six main religions; Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism plus Humanism.
In West Acton Religious Education has a significant role for the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It promotes respect and tolerance towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. In RE pupils will practice their British values and school values. Pupils develop an understanding and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, and cultural practices of the UK’s principal religions and worldviews and of their influence in the local, national and wider global community. Pupils will gain essential knowledge and understanding about religion and worldviews together with a deeper understanding of what they can learn from other religions and worldviews. This will give pupils a better diverse understanding of the world and society, to become well-rounded educated citizens. Pupils acquire skills to respectfully challenge others, both in the search of their own spiritual deepening and in curiosity about others. Through Religious Education, pupils gain a broader view of religious and secular communities.
Implementation
RE is taught weekly to ensure we meet the expected time allocation and the curriculum coverage it needs to fully explore the subject. (EYFS 30 min/KS1 40 mins/KS2 50mins)
Within each theme throughout the Key Stages, there is a ‘big’ question and mini questions that is explored through the learning so pupils delve deeper into themes. Pupils are assessed in RE through these questions at the beginning, throughout and at the end of each topic. In EYFS pupils learn RE through Understanding of the World (UTW) and Personal Social and Emotional Development (PSED).
During teaching links are made to the British Values and West Acton primary school values and the Equality Act 2010. During lessons vocabulary is defined and pupils recall their previous learning. RE is taught through thought provoking, differentiated activities which include discussion to develop pupil’s enquiry skills, drama, the use of artefacts, pictures, stories, and the use of periods of stillness and reflection. Pupils are encouraged to ask and answers questions about their own religion and others’. RE learning weighs heavily on discussions lead by questioning and it is at this point where pupils are given most valuable feedback on their learning. Wherever appropriate, we make links with other aspects of the curriculum but particularly Personal Social, Health and Economics (PSHE). We also make use of assembly time to celebrate and explore religious events or practices.
RE teaching and learning is monitored on a termly basis. This includes learning walks, book looks and pupil voice.
Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education lesson by request to the Head Teacher.
Impact
Pupils develop a greater knowledge and understanding of the six principles, religious and non-religious belief (worldviews) or traditions represented in Britain today. This will include reflecting on the impacts of these beliefs within school and in their own communities. Pupils are able to discern between those traditions, beliefs and practice that deserve respect, and those practices and beliefs that can lead them into danger. Pupils grow in their spiritual development and have a sense of awe, wonder and mystery about the world around them. In preparing for life in society, pupils are aware of their own exploration in the quest for the meaning of life and are open to the different ways others will respond to them. Pupils deepen their own beliefs and values in the light of the beliefs of others, both religious and non-religious and the values of the school community. Pupils demonstrate a positive attitude towards people of any religion and show an understanding of cultural beliefs different to their own. They establish respectful behaviour to all and this is transferable outside of school in the wider community and beyond.
How the Curriculum is adapted for SEND
RE learning includes a range of different vocabulary, themes and concepts which the pupils will need to grasp at a good understanding in the subject to progress well. Therefore, adaptive teaching and inclusive resources and tools such as Communication and Print programs (Inprint or Widgit) and Voice 21 speaking and listening oracy program, will support pupils to be able to share their ideas during discussions and listen to the point of view of others. Lessons are differentiated and scaffolding strategies used to meet individual learning needs. Visual aids, simplified texts, and multi-sensory learning are employed to support EAL and SEND pupils. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited regularly. Carefully selected online videos and images are used to further support and enhance learning in RE.
Home Learning
At the start of the autumn term, pupils are encouraged to take part in a homework project to design a front cover for the RE class book and a winning cover chosen for the year group. Home learning in RE is also promoted through the NATRE Spirited Arts Competition projects where pupils can collaborate with their families to produce artwork around a religious theme. Pupils have access to ‘Purple Mash’ where they can complete RE activities appropriate to their year group learning.
Cultural Capital
In order for pupils to develop a deeper understanding of religions, each year group plans a visit to a place of worship or local religious leader workshop to provide pupils with first-hand experience. Visits and workshops enhance pupil’s learning by placing their learning in context and helps to make it interesting and exciting. Additionally, during religious celebrations local religious leaders are inviting to whole school assemblies.
